Chapter Meeting (Pints and Pixels) - Antarctica: Going to Extremes with Jonathan Chester

Jonathan and a dramatic ice that pierces an iceberg - Cape Darnley, Antarctica

ASMP Kansas City - Mid America Chapter President, Jonathan Chester, has recently returned from an expedition to East Antarctica aboard the Russian ice breaker, the Kaptian Khlebnikov. This was the final voyage of this amazing vessel as a tourist expedition ship.

Jonathan will share with ASMP members and photographers a selection of the 20,000 images he shot on the voyage in a multi media presentation.

Highlights will include: the notable anniversaries celebrated on the trip like the centennial of Norwegian, Roald Amundsen reaching the South Pole, the dramatic ice-scapes and the growing concern over the effects of global warming on the wildlife of the region, especially the incredible emperor penguins.

Estimating 101 Presentation Online

Twenty five photographers braved the cold and rain on Wednesday, November 2nd to check out Lucas Cosgrove's " red X incubator space" adjacent to his very cooly and homely studio . The incubator is due to be finished early in 2012 so anyone photographer / artist / designer/ looking for a desk in a shared creative work environment should drop him a note and get in line.

Comments were extremely positive and it already stands as a testament to lots of hard work and creativity. Lucas's Studio is also available to rent. Those that still have not had the pleasure of seeing what he is working on can check out the progress on his blog

JC Presenting Estimating 101 Photo Chris Vleisides

Conducted by the raging potbelly stove after the beer and pizza were consumed, we got to work trying to learn a little more about this ever challenging business aspect of being a professional photographer. Estimating 101 was conducted as two, part exercise with Jonathan Chester presenting a keynote slide show outlining the many resources available to members on the ASMP National Website. Then we workshopped 5 different estimating scenarios and had attendees give "off the cuff written bids" that several members then critiqued.

Very positive feedback was received about the evening and several people asked that the Keynote be available online.

Thanks to presenters: John Mutrux, Chris Vleisides, Jeff Evrard and Jeremy Ruzich and to board members Tom Elfter and Robin Lorenson for helping with the logistics.

What Do I Charge? and Copyright Registration programs

On January 28 we hosted the "What Do I Charge?" program and a Copyright Registration program the next morning. Susan Carr, former national president and Chicago ASMP member, presented the programs.
Both meetings were well attended and received good reviews. The programs are sponsored by national for the education of photographers. Also in attendance was Kate Baldwin a national director from Seattle.

Thank you Susan both programs were great.

Happy Hour at Lights On Kansas City

THANKS TO EVOLUTION PHOTOGRAPHICS AND LIGHTS ON KANSAS CITY FOR PROVIDING THE DRINKS AND SNACKS.

Thursday December we had our Monthly Happy Hour at Lights On Kansas City.

LOKC is video lighting and equipment rental company in Kansas City KS. on Merriam Drive.

It was a very interesting 2 hours with all kinds cool toys for the serious photographer.

The photos show Bill Thomas the owner and "professional grip" showing us around the grip trucks which are available for rent.

All who came received a roll of "Pro Gaffers Tape" and a gel sample book.

Velvet Dog Happy Hour

Thanks to everyone for such a great turnout for our first (of hopefully many), PintsNPixels! The party was wonderful, lots of new friends were made, and old friends were reconnected, it was exciting! Also, the slideshow was a hit, it was great to see what everyone has been shooting, and we couldn't have done it without everyone's participation.

Four great big Thank You's to first, our great sponsors, Evolution Photographics for supplying all the eats and libations, Overland Photo Supply for supplying the great door prizes! We also want to thank Ben Weddle and his staff for the venue, and Nick Vedros for use of the projector!
